Music Theatre Kapsäkki is opening a new theatre, concert hall, and restaurant in Helsinki

Helsinki will get a new music theatre space and restaurant in September 2009. The 10-year-old Music Theatre Kapsäkki will thus end touring in other venues by opening its first own theatre in Vallila, Helsinki. The new theatre significantly contributes to the downtown artistic scene. It will also be available for use for other independent groups.

Director Reetta Ristimäki is enthusiastic: ”Having a space of our own will enable us to broaden our repertoire and we will simply be easier to find. With the new space, we can also run shows for a longer period of time. We will also be happy to have our facility be available for other groups. We will not stop touring though, completely.”

The theatre space--originated as a movie theatre Allotria will be thus returned to cultural use and after the renovations, will show case Finnish architecture from the 1950’s. The venue will seat almost 250 patrons. In addition to the theatre, which will feature Kapsakki productions, the venue will feature a restaurant. Music Theatre Kapsäkki sponsors the renovations, with support from the Ministry of Education.

The restaurant Allotria will be opened in conjunction with the Art Goes Kapakka event in August. Maiju Lesti who has over 10 years of experience in managing Restaurant Nosturi at the Kulttuuritalo will manage restaurant.

The season is launched by Yhden Tähden Revyy, Revy by One Star

Its high quality, unique, and novel Finnish music theatre knows Kapsäkki. Yhden Tähden Revyy produced by Kapsäkki, launches the season in September. Afterwards, Parasta ennen cabaret will follow, followed by Iiro Rantala New Trio, Maria de Buenos Aires, and Fetish cabaret. Wednesdays are dedicated for music theatre for youth, ranging from 3-year-olds to teenagers.

The restaurant’s relaxed atmosphere, generous portions, quality wines and excellent coffee, along with interesting artistic programming, promise to entertain.

The history of the building goes back to the Finnish golden design era of 1950’s. This will be honoured in the decor with a modern flair. The look of the restaurant will liven the neighbourhood.

The restaurant’s live music club program will vary from pop to tango, for example to the tunes of Pekka Kuusisto and Iiro Rantala, from spaghetti opera to Sirkka Liisa Sass’s couplets, and from ballades to Christmas music.
